Lipoplasty or Liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of excess body fat by using specialized surgical equipment for suction, typically performed by a plastic surgeon. By removing unwanted deposits of excess fat, liposuction improves body structure and smoothes irregular or distorted body shapes. The procedure is sometimes called to as body contouring. Liposuction may be useful for contouring under the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, breasts, abdomen, and hips.

The patient before undergoing liposuction treatment certain criteria must be met. An initial patient consultation including a history, a thorough physical examination, and a psychological health examination should be done. The patient must understand the preoperative preparations, the liposuction procedures, and the precise postoperative care. There are certain pre-existing conditions that are needs to be checked and brought under control before any liposuction like history of cardiac problems, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

There are several different liposuction procedures used like tumescent liposuction, the lidocaine, the super-wet technique. This technique helps to remove fat from dense, fibrous areas of the body such as the upper back or enlarged male breast tissue. UAL is often used in combination with the tumescent technique, in secondary procedures, or when precision is enhanced. In general, this procedure takes longer than the super-wet technique.

The liposuctioned area may appear larger than before surgery because of swelling. A tight stocking, girdle, or snug elastic dressing is applied over the treated area to reduce swelling and bleeding and to help shrink the skin to fit the new contour. Patients should expect swelling, bruising, numbness, and pain that can be managed with medications. The stitches are removed in 5 to 10 days and patient is given antibiotics to prevent infection.

The patient may feel better after about a week or two following liposuction surgery. Bruising and swelling is usually subsides within three weeks, by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet, it can help to maintain new shape. The risk factors are shock, fluid overload, infections, bleeding, blood clot, and fat embolism in liposuction

Liposuction may or may not require hospitalization, depending on the location and extent of surgery. Liposuction can be done in an office-based facility, in a surgery center on an outpatient basis, or in a hospital. For reasons of cost and convenience, liposuction of smaller volumes is usually done as an outpatient. Liposuction is a serious surgical procedure and possibly may involve a painful recovery. It has the potential for rare but serious or occasionally fatal complications, so the decision to have liposuction should be well thought out.
