Mammary Reduction

When you feel symptoms such as back, neck, and shoulder ache; mammary pain, submammary contact dermatitis, and signs of alteration in the normal shape of the spine, all related with a higher mammary volume than the normal (300 gr.), you always think in how to reduce that volume, not with transitory measures, but with definite and effective measures, such as the surgical mammary reduction. Mammary hypertrophy can appear in diverse age groups and under different circumstances, hence adolescent, young, middle-age, and elderly women come to medical consultation with no other reason than to reduce the size of their breasts. The surgical techniques for a reduction mammoplasty are very varied and choosing the right one depends basically on the patient?s age, mammary skin quality, breast volume, position of the mammary areolas in the torax, the surgeon?s experience with the used technique and the expectations of the patient with regards to the quality of the results.

For this reason it is important to visit the consulting room to do clinic history, a physical exam, measurements, and an agreement of the new mammary size. If the decision to have an operation is taken then the process continues with picture documentation, blood tests, mammography and/or mammary echo, cardiologic evaluation, and a consultation with an anesthesiologist. This surgery is performed in an operation room with an approximate duration of 2 to 3 hours with local and general anesthesia or sedation. Afterwards, the patient is moved to the recovery room and then to hospitalization. The time required in the hospital ranges from one to two days, with the reason of receiving special care, which is necessary for the surgical success. Cares at home are basically getting good sleep, take the antibiotics and analgesics, diary bath, and wound cleaning. You can eat what you normally eat, but physical exercise will have to wait until a month after the surgery. The position and shape of the scars are varied; they depend on the characteristics of the breasts and the experience of the surgeon with determined surgical techniques, all of which are valid when the goal is to obtain results with appropriate size, cone-shaped breasts, symmetric breasts, and areolas with optimal location, size, and shape.
