Endoscopic Plastic Surgery

Endoscopy is a surgical technique that involves the use of an endoscope, with the help of a special viewing instrument that allows a surgeon to see the body's internal structures through very small incisions. It has been used in urology, gallbladder removal, orthopedic surgery, tubal ligation, and knee surgery and gynecology for decades.

The Endoscopic instruments have currently been introduced in the Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons believe that the technique which holds great promise is needed to begin its success, for long-term purposes. Endoscopy is being used on a restrained basis for both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Endoscope consists of two basic parts that a tubular probe fitted with a tiny camera and bright light, which is inserted through a small incision, and a viewing screen, which magnifies the transmitted images of the body's internal structures. During surgery, the surgeon watches the screen while moving the tube with the help of the endoscope through the surgical area. Surgical instrument such as a scalpel, scissors, or forceps must be inserted through a different point of entry and manipulated within the tissue.

Surgery carries risks and every incision leaves a scar in nature. In the endoscopic surgery, the scars are likely to be hidden, much smaller and some of the after effects of surgery will be minimized. The risk of endoscopy is sensory loss from nerve damage is also decreased. Endoscopic surgery may also allow avoiding an overnight hospital stay. Many endoscopic procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation and also bleeding, bruising and swelling may be significantly reduced.

Endoscopic surgery requires less recovery time than is usually required for open procedures. The endoscopic approach has only recently been applied to plastic surgery procedures. Endoscopy surgery is mostly used in the various areas of urology, gallbladder removal, orthopedic operation, knee operation, in some of the heart surgery, gynecology, etc. There are some known risks, which vary in severity depending on the procedure being performed. These include infection, fluid accumulation beneath the skin, blood vessel damage, nerve damage or loss of feeling, internal perforation injury, and skin injury.
