At its November 2005 meeting the California Medical Board voted unanimously to deny equivalent status to The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. As a consumer it is important to distinguish between surgeons that claim to be board certified and the status extended to the boards they are affiliated with. Consumers should be aware that not all boards are recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties. In other words, not all boards are created equal.

At The Plastic Surgery Group our surgeons are Board Certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and members in good standing of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

In most states, including Ohio, a licensed physician may perform cosmetic procedures without being board-certified in plastic surgery. Board Certified does not mean a physician is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS.) As an educated consumer you have an obligation to take the time to identify exactly which boards have certified your surgeon as well as the type of specialized training your surgeon has received.

All members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are certified by the ABPS (The American Board of Plastic Surgeons.) The ABPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties was created for the safety and protection of patients and monitors the quality of a surgeons medical education. The ABPS offers education programs to further enhance the skill of its members. While the intent of the American Board of Plastic Surgery is not to designate eligibility of who may perform plastic surgery procedures, it does resolve to initiate the qualifying requirements for applicants requesting certification, regulate comprehensive examinations and present certification to those who meet the establish requirements.
