Cosmetic Surgery & The Forgotten Aspects of Facelifts

While standard facelift procedures combat wrinkles & sagging, the smile is often ignored.

Highland Park, IL (PRWEB) November 11, 2005 -- While an attractive smile is the number one feature associated with youth and beauty, many of today?s surgeons are neglecting the area or ignoring it altogether. Unfortunately, the current trends of plastic surgery tend to sacrifice the crucial enhancement of the mouth and lips and instead focus solely on the more obvious effects of aging that manifest in the rest of the face.

Steven Bloch, M.D. of Highland Park agrees, and is spearheading an effort to alter these trends. He advocates paying particular attention to the mouth when cultivating a patient?s desired look, referring to it as the ?forgotten aspect of the facelift? and one that deserves meticulous consideration. ?We have all gotten very good at focusing on the jowls, neck, cheeks, eyes and brow of the aging face as part of a facelift procedure,? he notes, ?but we often overlook the most critical aspect of the face -- the mouth and lips.?

While procedures such as the facelift are effective in combating the obvious sagging and wrinkles associated with the aging process, they do little to specifically improve the appearance of the mouth. Dr. Bloch incorporates multiple procedures in the effort to correct the signs of aging specific to the mouth and lips.

If lip lengthening is the problem as a result of aging, a lip lift -- placing a small incision at the base of the nose and actually lifting the lips - is performed and often has an immediate and a dramatic effect. This procedure is often combined with an anguloplasty to lift the corners of the mouth in order to correct the marionette lines that often advertise age on the face. Wrinkles and volume loss can also be addressed with multiple approaches from injectable fillers, to fat injections, laser resurfacing, and chemical peels, often done in combination.

Dr. Steven Bloch is internationally recognized as one of the foremost practitioners of modern Plastic Surgical techniques. After receiving his medical degree at State University of New York, he served residences in surgery and Plastic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin where he was Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Bloch has had specialized training in aesthetic surgery, is board certified in Plastic Surgery, and was a past president of the Chicago Society of Plastic Surgery.

A nationally acclaimed authority on plastic surgery matters, he has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Discovery Channel, CBS, NBC, WGN and the Fox News Network, and has been featured in Vogue and Allure magazines.
